OK, I have to admit, when I first saw this stroller in double mode, with a child down below behind the main seat, I did think it was a strange seating arrangement. What child would want to be down below like that? Then I read rave reviews from parents and saw it in action and decided to take my two girls to the store for a test ride. Wow, is it a smooth ride (what do you expect from those air tires) and a breeze to push! It folds down easily and compactly for a stroller with 3 air tires, fits nicely in the trunk of any car and double seat slides off easily with the push of two little buttons. The tires can also be easily removed if needed.

br /This stroller is just what I needed, a double that doesn't act like a big bulky double! I absolutely love it, and I love the apple green color, too, no more boring black or navy :-). I have to say, some of the features aren't necessarily the most high-tech (for example the way to recline is to undo various buckles and zippers) but it is very functional and I would guess that these simpler designs keep the stroller being very light weight for a jogger/all-terrain. Since I have a toddler who won't always ride but wants to ride more often than I thought - this is PERFECT! If she doesn't want to ride, I am not stuck with a huge stroller trying to navigate around, and if she does, no problem, double seat is easy to attach! I also bought the "hangbag" which provides me with a pocket to store things like keys, etc., and two drink holders. I just received this stroller a few days ago, but with my initial use of it, I know I am gonna just love it! (and I have owned a few strollers...)

br /If you have two children close in age - run, don't walk, and buy this stroller! Super versatile and cool to boot!

Looks good, functions okay

I have used this stroller extensively for almost a year, along with the doubles kit (separate purchase - the lower seat fitted below/behind the main seat) for our 3 1/2 year old and our 18 month old. This is the third stroller I have used, though the first to accomodate 2 kids. It looks good and comes in a decent selection of colors.
br /
br /There are problems with this stroller however. I actually called the company and discussed the problems with their design engineer, and they were aware of some of these issues.
br /
br /The first is that a child seated in the lower seat can put their fingers in the spokes. Not all kids may do this, but ours did. I'm not sure of the potential for a real injury (but my hunch is there could be), for us it was mostly about crying when the fingers were bumped, and dirty fingers. The only way to prevent them from doing this, we were told, was to buy the sold-separately "mud guards". These are not really mud guards (as the engineer confirmed) but an attempt by the company to fix the fingers-in-the-spokes problem after the fact. These mud guards are difficult to fit and only sort of take care of the problem (fingers can reach around them.) The problem really is a child that's too close to fast-moving wheels.
br /
br /The second problem has two parts to it - the stroller is very heavy (it is made of steel, not aluminum as many strollers are) and the "fold up" feature creates a scissor-action which can at minimum give your finger a blood blister - at maximum could really damage a little finger. The stroller really springs closed with some force when the levers are triggered, so watch where you are holding on. I mentioned to the engineer that there should be a warning put on the stroller to warn of this danger - he said there should, but they weren't allowed to put stickers on (even warning stickers...) due to Canadian standards, but they were working on a stenciled paint label.
br /
br /The third problem is the wheels - the inner tubes are of poor quality and they do not hold up well when pushing the stroller at an angle up an incline. It tends to "roll" the tire and inner tube off the wheel hub under the weight of two kids, tearing the inner tube and damaging the tire. Keep in mind though, we use our stroller on hills frequently. Another thing to keep in mind - this type of damage (wheel issues) isn't covered by the warranty. You break it, you buy a whole other wheel ($100+, depending on currency.)
br /
br /The fourth problem is the lower seat itself. While it worked great when our baby was younger, as she got bigger (and heavier) it became increasingly difficult to manuever her in behind/below the main seat. This process was made more complex by the way the straps are designed - you have to hold the buckle "tongue" forward while sliding the child into this lower seat.
br /
br /The fifth problem was not really to do with the stroller, but the company. It's a bit strange. When I called Phil Ted's in New Zealand to discuss the problems, they had what I considered to be a border-line racist "joke" voice as their answer voice (the voice which offers choices to route your call.) It was someone doing a very broad impression of a Pakistani or Indian voice, I guess to parody the practice of call centers in countries like India, but I just felt it was in really poor taste. It was obviously trying to be humorous, maybe part of a conscious company policy to be "cool" or "edgy" (I called weeks later and they had someone doing a Sean Connery impression), but I'm not sure what I would have thought if I was a customer from Pakistan or India. Really offended is my guess. As I said, a bit strange, particularly for an official customer call number. Hopefully they've changed this (this happened in about April of 2007.)

br /Anyway, overall a three star stroller, maybe an extra half star - bottom line is it looks good but functions okay.

Love this stroller!

(Originally written 3/7/06) My brother and sister-in-law just bought the Phil Ted's E3 with doubles kit for us as we await the arrival of our second child. Our first is almost 2 1/2 and I was really looking for a double stroller that wasn't too heavy, was able to actually go into the aisles of most stores, and would also allow my kids to both fall asleep in it if needed for those all day excursions to amusement parks, etc. This stroller definitely meets those requirements. It's light enough that at 7 1/2 months pregnant, I can easily lift it into my car by myself, and it doesn't take up any more room in the car than my current single stroller. I love the way it looks, and even with two kids in it (my nephew has been the second child several times) it seems easier to push than my single Graco stroller. I can easily steer it with one hand when needed. I love that it can be used with an infant and toddler and then later with two toddlers (many double strollers cannot be used until your smaller child is old enough to sit up on their own).
br /
br /The only downsides I see (there is no such thing as a perfect double stroller, IMO) are 1) The basket is only rated for 7 lbs of stuff... my small diaper bag may make it, but I'm used to being able to toss my purse and sweater in there at times and will have to get used to not being able to do that. 2) As the smaller child grows, you may find it difficult to access the basket, as their feet end up in there. Phil Teds do offer some bags you can add to the stoller to increase storage space though. 3) Some people complain that in the two toddler mode, the smaller child (in the rear of the stroller) is stuck looking at the back of the larger child's seat. I don't think this will be a problem for us, but I've heard others complain about it. 4) No cup holder -- not an issue for us, but would be for some of my mom friends. There might be after market cup holders that would work with it, however.

br /Overall this is an incredible double stroller and we feel like it was well worth the price.
br /
br /ETA (8/29/06): We just got back from our first trip to an amusement park with our stroller and we loved it! In the doubles mode, we were able to store bags in the second seat a great deal of the time as one or the other of our kids was either walking or insisting on being held. Be warned that this stroller attracts attention -- you will spend time talking at length to other parents about it.
br /
br /ETA (5/31/07): So we still love our Phil Teds E3, but I had one more thing to add... the tires. Great, but if you get a flat (which we recently did) we found that regular bicycle pumps would not work on the standard 12 1/2" inner tube you could get at most bike or toy stores (and we could not find a source for 12 1/2" inner tubes with the bent valve stems). What you will need to be able to use the regular inner tubes with straight valves on these wheels is something called a "frame pump" -- it's got a flexible hose and a screw on end which fits easily on the tight space in the wheels. The added benefit of having this pump is it is super portable so if you loose air, it can travel in the car with you.

Absolutely worth the investment!

Really, really, really . . . buy this stroller! You will NOT be disappointed! Look at it as an investment, and BUY IT! We love ours and our 2-year-old requests to sit in the back seat, rather than the front. I did a lot of research on double strollers, even tried several, and I am so elated that we went with the Phil and Ted's. FANTASTIC, I cannot rave enough!
